An izakaya (Japanese: ee-ZAH-ka-yah) is a type of informal Japanese gastropub. Izakaya consisting of i (to stay) and sakaya (sake shop), indicating that izakaya originated from sake shops that allowed customers to sit on the premises to drink. The izakaya embodies all aspects of Japanese food culture – from first class fine dining to late night street food.
Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar
is aimed exactly at expanding Copenhagen’s culinary horizon with the introduction of a true Japanese Izakaya-kitchen into the city’s food scene – one that simultaneously gives rise to Copenhagen’s very first real sake bar.
In the Jah version of the izakaya kitchen, our Japanese chefs introduces, not only authentic and classic izakaya dishes, but also a locally rooted "seasonal menu", offering the best produce from organic and biodynamic farming, to the freshest fish and shellfish on the market, as well as organic and free range meat and poultry and what ever is in season.
All served to the sound of sweet Jah music vibes
In popular terms, the Izakaya-kitchen could be described as the traditional Japanese version of tapas or “bar food”. Thus, an Izakaya-meal always consists of small dishes of relatively simple composition and is always served with sake, beer, and, in the case of Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar, ample servings of natural wine as well.
As with Spanish tapas, one might order a selection of small dishes – both cold and hot – like sashimi and gyoza, which are then served in a steady stream and savoured bite-size between drinks and conversation. In Japan, the local Izakaya is a place where Japanese workers go after a long day at work to let their hair down and share life’s offerings in an informal, noisy and never boring atmosphere.

Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar offers a small, but carefully selected wine list of small house producers of delicious natural and organic wines. We have chosen to source our wines from some of Copenhagens best specialised wine importers within the field, and natural wine is a good match with the style of food served at Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar.
Red, white, sparkling or orange, we want our wines to reflect the attitude of the kitchen: clean, honest, well made and delicious.
Japanese izakayas and sake belong together. Sake is a sophisticated and very nuanced product with a delightful uplifting effect which, in contrast to most traditional wines, is perfectly complimentary to the subtle flavours of Japanese cuisine – especially Izakaya.
Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar offers a wide selection of sake - from high end Junmai to the unique, unfiltered “natural sakes”.
If sake alone is not enough, our list also includes a fine selection of Shōchū and Japanese whisky.
Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar also loves beer, why we have developed a unique beer in collaboration with the magnificent Beer Here and Penyllan Brewery on the Danish island Bornholm.
Jah Beer is a light IPA With notes of fresh yuzu and Japanese hops that compliments the flavors of the food of Jah perfectly. Best served as draft beer in a frozen glass, or to take away by the bottle.
By the bottle we also offer the Jamaican beer Red Stripe, since after all - we are a Japanese reggae bar.
